Apparel Industry Certificate of Registration

Businesses that make clothing and apparel must register every year with the New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL). Contractors, jobbers, and manufacturers must all register.

Cleaning and tailoring businesses are exempt if they do not sell clothing themselves. Registration must happen before January 15 every year.

Businesses must follow laws that protect workers' rights and limit labor conditions. If a business is identified as a "sweatshop," it will not be allowed to register. Sweatshops will be shut down. For more information, consult "How to Identify Garment Sweatshops" in "Additional Resources."
